1. How do I care for my carving?
We give our customers a care card explaining proper care of the carving. We put a penetrating oil and polyurethane on all of our carvings. If carving is going outdoors it is best to keep it in a shady area, undercover like a porch or covered deck. The direct sunlight tends to dry the wood too fast which can cause excessive cracking. It is best to allow the carving to dry slowly. Carvings should be kept off the ground and placed on furniture feet or small rocks, etc to help circulate air underneath. Once a year treatment with polyurethane is best to freshen your carving. We suggest washing the carving first to remove dirt or grime, and sand lightly with 150 grit paper to give the new finish a surface to adhere to.
If carving is indoors just a dusting with furniture polish and/or vacuuming is all that is necessary. Do keep away from radiant heat sources such as fireplaces or baseboards to avoid drying too quickly.
2.
Will my carving crack or break in half?Small checks/cracks in the wood is a normal process as the wood dries giving it a unique character. Wood is a bi-product of a living entity, and even though we do as much as we can to prevent checking, nothing can prevent all cracks. Your carving is sealed to help prevent major cracks and we also put a saw cut down the back to help with the major expansion as the wood dries. The saw cut helps prevent any major cracking in the front of the carving. Following instructions as above will help keep the carving looking its best. Most people who buy chainsaw art understand wood and appreciate the uniqueness compared to products made with plastic or resin and out of a mold.
Take care of the wood product and it will stay in great shape. If you neglect it for years by leaving it out in extreme weather changes, letting it sit in standing water or moist area, and not treating it could cause some major cracking and rotting but we've never seen one crack in half!
